This is what happens when you get too overly excited and start downloading and installing apha software! I read the warning label about VS2005 not working with WinHEC Longhorn, but the PDC Whidbey also does not work...
After the professional developers conference (PDC), I ordered copies of the Visual Studio .NET “Whidbey” and Windows “Longhorn” via my MSDN Universal Subscription. Of course, installing this on a production box was not an option so I dealt with a 4 hour install of the OS into Virtual PC. It took a few hours to get the VPC Add-ins installed (which are a MUST for performance reasons), and then things got going a little faster. It took three attempts to get Whidbey installed on Longhorn. Then I installed the Longhorn SDK so I could play around with Indigo. But I kept getting an error “Cannot find assembly System.Messagebus.dll”.
So this week I downloaded the WinHEC build of Longhorn and went through the same kinds of woes installing it into Virtual PC and getting the add-ins installed. Again, there was the “Missing System.Messagebus.dll” problem. I remedied that by installing the PDC version of Whidbey on an XP box and manually copying over the missing assemblies....
Neither the PDC Visual Studio .NET nor the latest Visual Studio 2005 community drop nor even the upcoming Visual Studio 2005 beta will install or run properly on Longhorn 4074.
